Disability Categories

If the IEP Team determines that the student meets eligibility criteria and is entitled to special education services under FAPE guidelines, an IEP must be developed. Eligibility for special education programs and services shall be determined by the presence of one or more of the following characteristics (300.7) (226.160)*:

  • Autism (Aut)
  • Behavior/Emotional Disorder (BD)
  • Deaf/Blindness (D/B)
  • Deafness (DF)
  • Hearing Impaired (HI)
  • Mental Impairment (MI)
  • Multiple Impairment (MD)
  • Other Health Impairment (OHI)
  • Physical Impairment (PI)
  • Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD)
  • Speech/Language Impairment (S/L)
  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
  • Visual Impairment (VI)
  • Developmental Delay (DD):One or more of the above listed disabilities for ages 3 -5 years old.
* NOTE: The numerical codes refer to sections of the Illinois State Board of Education’s Illinois Administrative Codes.
